Coffee in the Park – 7th May 2011

We had a good morning for our first Coffee in the Park of 2011.

Following heavy overnight rain, we gathered at Parkside at 10am for a short time of prayer.  After this, with the weather improving, we decided to set up the marquee, Parkside sign and tables in Kidwells park, behind Parkside, as planned.

This would be our final chance to practice setting up the marquee before Maidenhead Carnival on June 11th, and all went without any problems.

We decided to put the ‘Free tea and coffee’ banner out in the park facing the town centre so it would be eye-catching as people walked through the park, rather than on the front wall.

Various friends came and joined us during the morning and we had a number of other good conversations with people in the park, of all ages.  In addition, the weather stayed fine for the whole morning which meant that there was no need to dry out the marquee afterwards.

It was an encouraging start to the summer and it’s hard to believe that the next time we’re out in the park will be the day of Maidenhead Carnival.  We have much to organise before then!

Family Service – 1st May 2011

We had around 40 people in for the latest in our series of monthly Family Services.

Today’s was chaired by Alan Michael in his own unique and entertaining way and began with the hymn ‘God sent His son – they call Him Jesus‘ and prayer.

We then enjoyed a number of children’s choruses aided by a couple of willing participants at the front to help out with actions.

Like the previous Family Service, there was another Memory Verse to learn, this time from Hebrews 11:1Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see‘.  Alan went on to explain a little about the verse before gradually hiding it to aid the learning process. Our second hymn, following on the theme of Faith was ‘Faithful One‘.

Following this, David Hedges came up to speak.  He took us through the healing of The Nobleman’s son mentioned in John 4 (verses 46 to 54).  After recounting the story, he went on to relate it to us with a number of questions under the heading ‘So what?‘.

Finally, we finished the service with singing ‘I know not why God’s wondrous grace‘ before Alan closed in prayer.

Mother’s Day Tea 2011

Invitation for Mother's Day Tea 2011

We had a good time for our annual Mother’s Day Tea, at Parkside with around 60 people coming along to enjoy a variety of food on offer.

The tea was ‘chaired’ by David Hedges and he welcomed people, gave thanks for the food and invited those there to ‘tuck in’!

Sandwiches, scones, crisps and cake a-plenty were devoured by the hungry masses with the coloured jelly proving popular as usual.

After the tea we enjoyed singing a few of the Sunday Club favourites before Victor came up to speak for a few minutes expanding on John 3:16 – For God loved the world so much that He gave his one and only son, Jesus Christ, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

All of the Mums at the tea were given a small present to take home with them.

It was especially good to welcome various people for the first time, including Andrew Burdett and his family, as well welcoming back other more familiar faces.

Our next Family Service is on 1st May at 11.30am.

Snowy Times

David emerges from the snow!

Our plans for the outreach in the High Street this morning were somewhat scuppered by the five inches of snow that fell during the morning.

The original idea was to spend 45 minutes in the High Street giving out invitations to the Candlelit Carol Service, as well as two or three giving a short word about Christmas.  In addition, we had prepared some wordsearches and bubbles to give away to the children.

Following a short time of prayer, we decided to head through the snow into the High St and split our resources to have people at every entrance to the Nicholson’s Centre.

Maidenhead High Street in the snow

The snow was falling heavily and we decided to focus on handing out invitations to the Carol Service rather than anything else.

We were able to give away over 250 tracts and invitations to the Carol Service altogether, and although our original plans weren’t able to be completed, we felt that it was still a worthwhile exercise to have carried out and pray that there may be those who will come along tomorrow as a result.

Afterwards, we gathered in Costa Coffee to thaw out and review the exercise before heading back to Parkside to retrieve our cars buried in the snowy car park.
