discover: Week 6 – 9 February 2014

Our sixth week of discover began with the singing of There is a hope and prayer.

Instead of a memory verse this week, we enjoyed a quiz which was based around anagrams of books of the Bible, some of which proved more challenging than others.

After the quiz, we had time for a couple of children’s choices, before they went out for their activities.

This was the final week of our Christianity Explored Course and Alan came up to read from Mark 10:13-27, ahead of David Angell coming up to speak on the subject of Grace: how can God accept us?

The rich young ruler in the reading from Mark 10 thinks he has everything, but wants something more. He felt he could earn eternal life.

In Mark 10:17, the man asks Jesus 'Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?'. Jesus replied 'Why do you call me good?'

Jesus goes on to list some of the Ten Commandments and the man replies that he has kept these since he was a boy.

The man is comparing himself to other people. 'Surely I'm good enough'. Jesus points out gently that this is not enough.

Jesus tells him to sell what he had, give to the poor and follow Him. If he really had wanted it, the man would have done it.

The first command is to love God with all your heart. No matter what the man had done, he wasn't good enough for God.

Jesus said 'How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God!'. There is nothing we can do that will please God.

No matter what we do, we're not good enough for God. Jesus tells us to come to God like a child in Mark 10:15.

All we can do is to reach out and receive what God has done for us through Jesus' death on the cross.

Jesus died on the cross because we needed a Saviour. He took our place and God's anger on Him. We just have to freely receive His gift.

We can't try and bargain with God over eternal life. We just have to accept His free gift of eternal life to us.

Mark's gospel is about the good news of Jesus' death and resurrection. We just have to accept He died for us.

Tonight in our conference we're beginning by reading 2 Timothy 3:14-15; Acts 14:8-11, 18-22; Acts 16:1-3 and 1 Timothy 4:12-16

Timothy was faithful. Are we faithful to God's calling in our lives?

We begin by looking at Timothy's childhood. Timothy was half Jew and half Gentile. His mother, Eunice, was a believer.

As Timothy was growing up, he looked to her faith as an example to him. As parents, we should look to guide our children to the Lord.

Timothy was between 15 and 17 when Paul came to Lystra and was stoned. Timothy saw and knew what Paul went through.

Timothy would have heard preaching by Paul and Barnabas realised it was genuine faith after seeing Paul suffer.

Timothy's childhood training made him receptive to the gospel message. In his day it was generally the poor and needy who were receptive.

In Acts 16 we're back in Lystra and Timothy is around 22. Timothy was a disciple. He sought to imitate the Lord in his life. Do we?

In Acts 16:2, Paul wanted Timothy to leave everything and go with him on his journey, preaching the good news. Would we be prepared to go?

Paul circumcised Timothy, allowing him access to the temple to preach to the Jews. Is there anything that hinders the gospel in our lives?

Paul's charge to Timothy in 1 Timothy 1:3, was to be in Ephesus as a teacher to restrain and correct false teaching. Not a pastor.

Our world today has lots of false teaching. The antidote is the Word of God. Timothy had to preach and practice it. We need to do the same.

Timothy had a gift to be able to meet the need of those at Ephesus and was endorsed by the elders. He needed to use his gift. How about us?

Discover Week 4 MV — Last week’s memory verse

We began the fifth week of discover with the singing of Come and see and prayer.

Afterwards we looked at the memory verse from last week – which again proved a struggle for people to remember.

We sang some children’s choices and finished our time together by singing I do not know what lies ahead.

The reading for this week was from Mark 15:40 to 16:8 and afterwards Alan came up to speak on this week’s subject ‘Resurrection: Why can Jesus rise?‘. Tweets from Alan’s talk are below:

Last week we looked at Jesus' death. Death is one thing that is inevitable for all of us.

Death separates us permanently from those who we love. Jesus' disciples thought that they wouldn't see him again, when he died.

The whole of the Christian faith hinges on whether or not Jesus rose back to life. Mark first demonstrates that Jesus died.

In Mark 16:1 Mary Magdelene and Mary took spices to anoint Jesus' body. They were expecting to find his body.

In Mark 15, Joseph went to ask for Jesus' body. Pilate asked the centurion to confirm that Jesus had died. Joseph put the body in the tomb.

Jesus was certainly dead. When they went to the tomb in Mark 16, the ladies found the stone rolled away and Jesus' body gone.

Instead they found an angel who told them 'He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him.'

Jesus appeared to several people following his death – including a group of 500! People talked and ate with him. Jesus was alive!

The women were afraid and ran from the grave. We can be scared to believe that he is alive too.

In Mark 16:7, they were told to tell Jesus' disciples that they would see him. We will see him too. Acts 17:31 – He will judge the world.

Although Peter had failed Jesus by denying him, Jesus met with him. The resurrection is a message of hope for us all.

Like the women, we're taught to 'Go and tell', in Acts 28:18-20. The disciples boldly went out to spread the news. We should do the same.

The resurrection is critical to the Christian message. If Jesus really did rise from the dead, he must be the Son of God.
