The Lord sets the goal for the believer as perfection. He knows our limitations (v1) 'we have one who speaks to the Father in our defence'.

Tests: vs3-8 Principle of Obedience. Can enjoy fellowship with Him only if we keep His commandments.

V6 is a real challenge to us. 'Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did.' Need to see evidence in our lives.

Test 2: (vs9-16) Practice of Love. 'Love one another as I have loved you'. God's love should be seen in our lives through the Holy Spirit.

Test 4: (v29) Portrail of Character. How we live our lives is as important as what we say. We should reflect God's righteousness.
